An APAP is a device that uses pressurized air to treat sleep apnea. The air pressure acts like a support, preventing the upper airway from collapsing during sleep.

APAP stands for “automatic positive airway pressure” and is one of the three major types of PAP therapy (the other two being CPAP and BiPAP.) Automatic simply means the PAP’s ability to automatically adjust its airflow. An APAP machine adjusts its own pressure settings according to your needs. The APAP monitors your breathing while you sleep, and then uses complex algorithms to work out your pressure needs. For example, if an APAP device detects difficulty breathing, the pressure applied will gradually increase. When breathing is stable, a lower pressure will be more appropriate for relaxed breathing. In this way, an APAP always delivers the least amount of airflow necessary to be effective – so they’re very popular with sleep apnea patients who otherwise have difficulty adjusting to standard CPAP.

On the other hand CPAP maintains one fixed continuous pressure level. CPAP stands for “continuous positive airway pressure” because its airflow is continuous. Your doctor will set the pressure setting once, and this will stay like this unless the pattern changes For this reason, you’ll also see these machines referred to as fixed-pressure or set-pressure CPAP.

Patients who have fairly regular breathing patterns over a period of time will probably be candidates for CPAP, while patients who experience multiple changes and irregular breathing through the night will probably need APAP. To supply the best solution for a patient, typically both a sleep study report is needed as well as sleep titration data.

Prism20A and Prisma SMART

Prism20A and Prisma SMART are two apnea solutions that use forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) to reliably distinguish between obstructive and central events. In response to events, prisma20A and Prisma SMART automatically provide continuous pressure adjustments tailored exactly to the patient‘s needs and therefore deliver very effective treatment. Equipped with the option of combining both CPAP and APAP modes with the comfortable pressure relief softPAP, both prisma20A and Prisma SMART offer a high degree of therapeutic flexibility.
